IntelliChoice Announces 2017 Best Overall Value Award Winners

IntelliChoice
, the leading provider of automotive cost and value analysis, announced today the winners of the 2017 Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards. Each year, IntelliChoice compiles and analyzes data on every new vehicle model sold in the United States to identify those that not only have low total ownership costs, but also lower than expected costs over time when compared to similar models. The BOVY awards help consumers understand that the total cost to own a vehicle is influenced by a variety of factors beyond initial purchase price. The 2017 BOVYs represent 23 diverse vehicle segments, enabling shoppers to directly compare similar vehicles over time.

Toyota leads the way with 5 awards from the Truck, Van, and Utility classes. This year also saw 5 other brands with multiple award winners with Acura, BMW, Honda, Jeep, and Lexus each taking home 2 awards.

The two Overall model categories represent those vehicles that are the standout values regardless of their competing segments. In addition, the Overall Brand Awards recognize those manufacturers that demonstrate a superior value proposition through their lowest cost of ownership or highest retained value within their popular or premium target market.

“This year the biggest surprise was in the Overall Brand Awards as Cadillac won best overall value among the premium brands and Porsche won for highest retained value among premium brands,” states Eric Anderson, Director of Data Products for IntelliChoice.

“There was also quite a few new winners this year as 14 of the 23 winners did not win in 2016,” continued Mr. Anderson, “though as usual there were some perennial winners like the Lexus ES 300h, Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Highlander.

Resale value continues to be the most important area of ownership cost as 16 of the 23 BOVY winners also received Highest or SmartChoice awards in retained value.   The Best Overall Value among all Popular Brand models was no exception as the winning vehicle, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, had the highest retained value among all vehicles. Though the best premium vehicle, Lexus ES300h, is associated with low fuel costs it was also a Highest Retained Value in its class.

Throughout the year, IntelliChoice aggregates and analyzes data on nearly 2,300 vehicles to determine its Best Overall Values. Data gathered from auto manufacturers, the U.S. government and third-party resources are used to determine the actual costs of ownership for each new vehicle over a five-year period. IntelliChoice then assigns a value rating to each vehicle and compares that rating to peer models to determine a Best Overall Value in each vehicle class.
