Carlsbad, Calif., (February 20, 2018) – TEN: The Enthusiast Network announced today that its Adventure Sports Group’s BIKE brand took home a win for Best Cover at the 2018 American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) Cover Awards.
The ASME Best Cover Contest honors the most outstanding magazine covers of the previous year. Selection criteria include the quality of the cover image, art direction and editorial copy as well as journalistic significance and newsstand strength.
BIKE won Best Cover – Travel and Adventure for its July ‘Open Season’ cover, beating out AFAR, Conde Naste Traveler, Vice and TEN’s own SURFER. The cover, photographed by Mattias Fredriksson and designed by Chato Aganza, combined the hauntingly monolithic nature of Mont Blanc with inviting, light-hearted, sweeping singletrack immortalizing the joy of mountain biking while distilling the emphasis of July’s feature story: the careless inviting ease of high alpine singletrack within Italy’s larger-than-life Aosta Valley.
“It is an incredible honor to take home an award of this magnitude, and the entire staff of Bike is grateful to ASME for the recognition,” said Nicole Formosa, editor in chief, BIKE at TEN: Adventure Sports Group. “The winning submission represents a classic Bike cover: a sublime stretch of singletrack set against a stunning high-alpine landscape, with the riders perfectly embodying the feelings of freedom and exploration that best encapsulate the sport of mountain biking. This cover is the result of the talent and dedication of Bike’s photo editor, Anthony Smith, and art director, Andre Aganza, and we share this honor with senior photographer Mattias Fredriksson, whose inspiring image of Karen Eller and Holger Meyer dwarfed by a foreboding Mont Blanc anchored the design.”
In addition to the Travel and Adventure win, BIKE was also a finalist for the Cover of the Year, which included entries from The California Sunday Magazine, GQ, Marie Claire, New York, The New Yorker and Sauce.
“The cover of BIKE magazine is hallowed ground for passionate mountain bikers, with every issue anticipated and obsessed over by our readers,” says Micah Abrams, TEN’s group content director. “Over the past volume of magazines, the design of these covers has taken on a new vitality, mirroring the excitement and energy in the sport with unexpected visual ideas. We’re thrilled that ASME has taken note and honored to receive the Best Cover- Travel and Adventure.”
Three other brands in the Adventure Sports Group were recognized this year as well. SURFER was a finalist in the Travel and Adventure category for their October cover ‘The Great Wave’, TRANSWORLD SKATEBOARDING was a finalist in Entertainment and Celebrity for their Dylan Rieder January cover, and TRANSWORLD MOTOCROSS was a finalist for Sports and Fitness for their Ken Roczen cover from November.
This year 128 magazines entered the contest, submitting 261 covers in 10 categories. More than 100 editors, art directors and photo editors judged the contest. 2.3 million media consumers saw the contest on Facebook, and 80,000 voted.
